This marks the beginning of our fourth year with a backyard pool. When we moved in, the pool had not been maintained for over two years. No filtering, no chemicals and the cover was over 30% of the pool surface. The water was so black I couldn’t see the bottom in the shallow end. It has a liner so we couldn’t drain it and start over.

Before Water Wise of America (Rochester, NY) introduced CWS’s ProMoss™ to this Chilled Water Loop, the facility had continuous flow issues due to contaminants. The pictures below demonstrate the effectiveness of the ProMoss™ over a four month period. During this time, both pressure and temperature readings have improved along with a dramatic reduction in iron levels.

The first contact chamber improvement is on all sizes of our ‘lobster cages,’ as they are affectionately known. Our Pool/Spa dealers know them as CC-STL, CC-STS and CC-STxS (for surge tank or gutter systems) and our Industrial dealers know them as CC-ITL, CC-ITM and CC-ITS. The bungees that hold the door shut now have easy to grip handles, making them more easily and more quickly opened and shut. It’s also much less likely that fingers will get pinched in the process. These units are also being produced with stainless steel clamps.

With the summer outdoor pool season coming up, I thought a short discussion on the use of cyanuric acid (CYA) in swimming pools is in order. CYA is used in outdoor pools to prevent UV light degradation of chlorine and thereby help maintain chlorine levels. CYA is supplied and used as a stand alone chemical and is also a major component of the “stabilized” chlorine products, dichlor and trichlor. While CYA is widely used, its effects on pool water are not widely understood.

What is the Langlier Saturation Index (LSI)?

The LSI is a simple calculation developed by a boiler engineer to try and predict whether calcium will form scale or water will become corrosive. It is based on the false assumption that all scale formation is due only to saturation and that the water is in direct contact with the metallic surface.

It is easy to use, simple to calculate, and is used by chemical companies and water treatment companies to predict scale or corrosion and monitor their treatment plans.

A recently published study is renewing concerns about toxic disinfection byproducts (DBP) in swimming pools and spas.   The study, published in Environmental Science & Technology (2016, Vol. 50, 6652-6662), included researchers from the University of South Carolina, Purdue University, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.   Though previous studies have shown a link between exposure to DBP and the occurrence of asthma and bladder cancer, this study documents the effects of DBP on mutagenicity (changes in DNA).
