The World Aquatic Health Conference was held in Charleston, SC on October 10-12 and it continues to be the premier science and education conference of the aquatic industry. My presentation on “Surface-bound Organic Contamination, Disinfection Byproducts (DBP) and Swimming Pool Filtration” was just one of many talks about disinfection byproducts in recreational water and the surrounding air. Again this year, there were numerous presentations about disinfection byproducts, water quality and air quality.
A new feature of the conference this year was the addition of two sessions entitled “Elements of WAHC”. The presentations in these sessions were live at the conference and also broadcast to venues in Boston, Colorado Springs, Dallas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Niagara Falls, ON. With the rising importance and understanding of organic load and disinfection byproducts, and their relationship to air and water quality, these sessions included presentations by Dr. Darla Goeres about the importance of biofilm in recreational water and by Dr. Ernest Blatchley discussing the links between water/air quality and chlorine disinfection.
The presence of organic contamination in recreational water directly relates to the production of toxic disinfection byproducts and also directly impacts air and water quality.
